Candles caused fatal fire

Unattended candles caused the fire that killed a mother and two of her children and injured four other people at a Lorton town house last month, Fairfax County authorities said Tuesday. The Sept. 22 blaze at 9639 Hagel Circle killed Eileen Cecilia Langham-Anderson, 24, Soloman Anderson, 5, and Alfonso Anderson, 3. They died from smoke inhalation and thermal burns. Three other children and one adult suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the fire.

Suspect sprays mall shoppers

A would-be shoplifter trying to make off with footwear from a Payless shoe store at the Ballston Common mall in Arlington, sprayed a can of Mace or pepper spray that left seven people seeking treatment for irritated eyes and skin, radio station WTOP reported.

Arlington County Police say the suspect discharged the spray Tuesday afternoon inside a mall entrance. None of the injuries are considered serious.

It was unclear whether the suspect got away with any shoes, WTOP reported.
