The Trump campaign will not be changing the precautionary measures it enforces at rallies to prevent the spread of the coronavirus following President Trump’s bout with the virus.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that the campaign “will have the same policies that we’ve had in place” during a Monday morning interview on Fox & Friends.
“The campaign has always handed out masks, encouraged people to wear them, provided hand sanitizer,” she added. “Ultimately, you have a right in this country to show up and express your political viewpoint. That’s why we have peaceful protests. And you can’t have one standard for the protesters out there on one side but not for those wanting to express their First Amendment rights in support of this president.”
Trump is set to hold his first in-person rally Monday night in Sanford, Florida. The event will take place less than two weeks after the president was diagnosed with COVID-19, which led to his hospitalization at Water Reed National Military Medical Center. The virus has spread throughout the White House. Since the president and first lady Melania Trump tested positive, several others, including advisers, White House reporters, members of the Trump campaign, and GOP lawmakers who had been at the White House, have also tested positive for the coronavirus.
Last month, the White House held an outdoor ceremony for the president’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. While those in attendance were tested for the coronavirus upon entrance, many were not wearing masks and were not adhering to the 6-feet social-distancing guideline recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Trump held a “law and order” event at the White House as his first in-person event since his positive test. The White House made it mandatory that people in attendance have masks, but it was not mandatory that they wear it.
