Robbers target two banks Monday in Baltimore’s downtown

Baltimore police and the FBI are investigating a bank robbery and a subsequent attempted robbery at bank branches Monday afternoon in downtown Baltimore.

An FBI spokeswoman said no suspects were in custody, and she could not say whether the same person or people were responsible for both incidents.

The first incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. at the Provident Bank branch at 114 E. Lexington St.

The suspect obtained money, some of which police later recovered, said bank spokeswoman Vicki Cox.

Cox declined to specify the amount of money taken, but said no one was hurt.

At 12:52 p.m., an individual attempted to rob M&T Bank?s Inner Harbor branch at 400 E. Pratt St.

“No money was taken,” said M&T Bank spokesman Phil Hosmer.

“No one was hurt.”

About a half-dozen police officers, including one on a bicycle and another on a Segway, converged on the M&T Bank branch across from the National Aquarium.

A member of M&T Bank?s corporate security staff arrived on the scene just minutes after police and questioned bystanders, who were taking pictures of the bank.

While police secured the bank and a police helicopter searched from above, the suspect was reportedly spotted one block north on Lombard Street.

The FBI investigates bank robberies as a federal offense because the banks are federally insured.
