A Navy admiral who was punished for wandering around a conference center drunk and naked has been reassigned to the Pentagon, according to a Navy release.
Rear Adm. David Baucom received non-judicial punishment for conduct unbecoming an officer and disorderly conduct/drunkenness, including a punitive letter permanently placed in his official record, the Navy announced on Monday.
Baucom was serving as the director of strategy, capabilities, policy and logistics at U.S. Transportation Command at the time of the incident in April while traveling to Florida on official business. He has since been removed from his job.
He was transferred to Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., in November and is now “under orders” to the Pentagon, the Navy release said.
Baucom drank all or part of at least eight alcoholic beverages during and after a dinner as part of the National Defense Transportation Association’s Transportation Advisory Board, Navy Times reported. According to the Washington Post, a heavily intoxicated Baucom hit his head on a barstool and wet his pants before requiring an escort back to his room.
Later that night, he thought he was going to the bathroom, but actually was leaving his room. He was later discovered by a colleague wandering the hotel naked, looking for a towel with which to cover himself, Navy Times reported.
In a statement to the newspaper, Baucom blamed his behavior on mixing alcohol and prescription medications and asked that his 34 years of service not be judged by a single mistake.
