A women’s magazine in Slovenia apologized to first lady Melania Trump on Friday and is compensating her as part of a settlement after it suggested she worked as an escort in the 1990s while pursuing a career as a model.
The magazine, Suzy, published an article in August 2016 that said the first lady worked for a modeling agency that also provided “elite escort” services in addition to modeling, according to the Associated Press.
But the magazine said the piece “was understood as if Melania Trump conducted the escort job. We have no proof for that. So we apologize. We had no intention to hurt and offend Mrs. Trump.”
Trump filed a libel lawsuit against the magazine, and ended up agreeing to a legal settlement, said Natasa Lusa, who sits on the publishing board for the company that publishes Suzy. The settlement included the apology, as well as an undisclosed amount of compensation.
Trump, a native of Slovenia, left the country in the early 1990s to pursue a modeling career. She met Trump in 1998 and they married in 2005.
