The fire erupted around 2:30 a.m., Huntsville Fire Chief Greg Mathis said at a press conference, adding that first responders had contained the main fire but that other, smaller ones in the administration building were still burning.
The attic of the prison’s west building and the attic of the third floor of the administration building are the units that were most affected, said Amanda Hernandez, director of communications for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
“Everyone is safe,” she said, adding that, if needed, the inmates could be transferred to other prisons throughout the state. There was no immediate word on what caused the fire.
