Maine shooting: Robert Card found dead after over 48-hour manhunt

Robert Card, the suspect in the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, has reportedly been found dead.

Card, 40, was the suspect in the fatal shooting of 18 people at a recreation center and bar on Wednesday. CNN referenced law enforcement sources saying that Card’s body was discovered with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) also confirmed to the Bangor Daily News that Card was dead, editor Michael Shepherd posted on X.

Card was reportedly found dead in Lisbon near a recycling center where he used to work in the same clothes he had on during the two shootings on Wednesday. The shooting suspect’s vehicle had been found abandoned in Lisbon, and Mike Sauschuck, the commissioner of the Maine Department of Public Safety, said on Friday they would be sending “divers in the water” near the location where the car was located.

Sen. Susan Collis (D-ME) said in a statement that Mainers can “breathe a collected sigh of relief” and that President Joe Biden alerted her that Card had been found dead.

“When President Biden called me this evening to tell me the perpetrator of the heinous attacks in Lewiston had been found, we both expressed our profound appreciation for the courage and determination of these brave men and women,” Collins said.

“To the families who lost loved ones and to those injured by this attack, I know that no words can diminish the shock, pain, and justifiable anger you feel. It is my hope that you will find solace and strength knowing that you are in the hearts of people throughout Maine and across the nation,” Collins continued.

Law enforcement ended the shelter-in-place order for Lewiston on Friday afternoon. Card is alleged to have entered Sparetime Recreation and Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant and opened fire, killing 18 people across both establishments. It was announced Friday that all 18 victims had been identified.

Shortly after Friday’s press conference, CNN reported that Card had legally purchased the weapon he is alleged to have used in the mass shooting shortly prior to being hospitalized for mental health reasons over the summer. The report cited multiple law enforcement sources.

The Maine State Police have scheduled a press conference for 10 p.m.
