Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) has predicted that President Joe Biden does not need to worry about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s candidacy in the 2024 presidential election because voters who “support democracy” will vote for the president.
Kennedy, seen by many to be the biggest competitor to Biden in securing the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination, is reportedly planning to switch tickets and run as an independent in the presidential election. Asked if such a run by Kennedy would hurt Biden’s reelection chances, Murphy said no.
HOW TEXAS HAS SHIFTED INTO A ‘BATTLEGROUND’ GOING INTO 2024
“Frankly, what you see is that portions of the electorate that are interested in Robert Kennedy Jr. tend to be coming from Donald Trump’s conspiracy theory base,” Murphy said. “So if he’s running as an independent, I think that may end up hurting Donald Trump, or the Republican nominee, more than Joe Biden.”
Murphy added that the press coverage of Kennedy’s run is “a bit of an elite media fascination.” He also stated that third-party candidates will not play as big a role in the 2024 presidential election as people may think.
“People who support democracy, who support Ukraine, who support competence in government are gonna understand that the only way to preserve those things is to vote for Joe Biden,” Murphy said.
Kennedy released a video on Friday stating that he would visit Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 9 “to make a major announcement.” The candidate did not specify what the announcement would involve but said this event “will be the one to come to.”

In addition to Biden, Kennedy’s Democratic primary opponents include Marianne Williamson and Terrisa Bukovinac.
Of the Republican primary candidates, former President Donald Trump is in the lead. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are also among those running for the Republican nomination.
