Biden renews call for gun control; Johnson has first interview as House speaker

President Joe Biden has renewed his calls for greater gun control following the mass shooting in Maine. At least 18 people have been killed and 13 injured in a shooting in Lewiston, Maine, with 40-year-old Robert Card identified as the top person of interest. Biden, as he has done following similar incidents, said limiting access to guns will prevent further violence.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) discussed problematic representatives and his qualms with the Biden administration in his first interview since taking the position. In an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Johnson avoided talking about censuring or expelling representatives such as Reps. George Santos (R-NY) or Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), pointing out the precarious position Congress is in.

The U.S. military conducted strikes in eastern Syria, targeting two facilities used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Thursday. The strikes, which were carried out by a pair of F-16 aircraft and had been approved by President Joe Biden, came in response to a series of recent attacks against U.S. troops in Syria and Iraq that were carried out by Iranian proxy forces in the Middle East. One strike targeted a “weapons storage area,” and the other was “an ammunition storage area,” according to a senior military official.
