Voters in eight states head to the polls Tuesday to decide key primary races as Democrats seek to deal President Trump and congressional Republicans a severe setback in November.

They have a lot riding on California. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who will turn 85 later this month, is trying to beat back a challenge from her Left. Democrats are trying to win seven Republican-held congressional districts that voted for Hillary Clinton — if they can get their preferred candidates on the general election ballot, since the top two finishers make it out of the primary regardless of party affiliation. And Democrats hope to extend their hold on the state’s governorship.

In New Jersey, Democrats are vying to put forth their strongest nominees to win congressional seats held by congressional Republicans. They will also try to make the governor’s race in Iowa, a swing state Trump won narrowly, and one House contest a referendum on the president. And they hope to nominate a Democrat who can win New Mexico’s governorship.
