CHICAGO (AP) — Ground has been broken for a new community center in the Pullman area on Chicago’s south side.
Gov. Pat Quinn’s office said in a news release that he and city and community leaders broke ground on the planned $15 million Pullman Community Center on Saturday. Representatives of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs were also on hand. Part of the cost is being covered by Major League Baseball and the National Football League.
Quinn said he believes the center will be an “anchor for Chicago’s south side” for years.
The 138,000 square-foot building is being built on 12 acres and will include three indoor multi-sports fields.
The Pullman community was started in the 1880s when The Pullman Company started building homes for the railroad car maker’s workers.
