Hillary Clinton’s campaign team released a statement late Wednesday decrying a Romanian hacker’s claims that he was able to easily infiltrate the former secretary of state’s private email server.
“There is absolutely no basis to believe the claims made by this criminal from his prison cell. In addition to the fact he offers no proof to support his claims, his descriptions of Secretary Clinton’s server are inaccurate. It is unfathomable that he would have gained access to her emails and not leaked them the way he did to his other victims,” the Democratic candidate’s team wrote in an email.
Fox News and NBC News both broke stories late Wednesday afternoon that charged Marcel Lehel Lazar, known as Guccifer, was able to get into Clinton’s account by first tapping into her friend’s, Sidney Blumenthal.
The hacker alleged the top diplomat’s system was not secure and that she lied when she had said it was.
Clinton’s team maintained the FBI has not reached out to her with any update on its investigation into her use of the server in light of Guccifer’s claims.
“We have received no indication from any government agency to support these claims, nor are they reflected in the range of charges that Guccifer already faces and that prompted his extradition in the first place. And it has been reported that security logs from Secretary Clinton’s email server do not show any evidence of foreign hacking,” the campaign wrote.
