Editor’s note: Derwood resident Judit Fehervari decided to return to exercising when she turned 40. Here is her story:
I have always been very active, but having a family, working full-time, buying a house, just being busy threw me off the track for a while.
Turning 40, I decided to seriously get back on the exercise routine. But what to do? I have done my share of gymnastics, swimming, handball, going to the gym, etc., and I wanted to do something fun and challenging that I had not done before.
So when my son’s martial arts school had a trial month for parents, I started to take classes to see how I would like it or how I could cope with it. After two weeks, I was hooked.
That was almost three years ago, and now I proudly wear my brown belt.
It was intimidating at first. Starting karate at my age with much — much — younger people the first time in my life? Fortunately, I had great instructors and made friends quickly.
It is a great feeling to put on the uniform twice a week, and to tie the belt — I don’t even mind sore muscles the following day.
My balance, my coordination, my flexibility have improved a lot; I am in great shape, and my fitness level is better than when I was 20 years old. Plus, it’s fun to break boards when testing for the next belt level.
I always push myself to run faster, jump higher, kick stronger and try to reach my personal best and always give 100 percent effort.
Our motto is “Never give up,” and that is exactly what I am doing. I will be eligible for the black belt next year and plan to continue the classes in the future.
Since then, my daughter also joined, so it is a family sport now. We share the love for the sport, the dedication, and we intend to develop ourselves to the most possible extent.
