A Baltimore building that houses the city’s gas and electric company exploded Wednesday morning, leaving at least 23 people injured and two workers stranded on scaffolding on the side of the building.
Mayor Brandon Scott thanked firefighters who cleared the building in a timely fashion.
“Without their bravery and quick response, the outcome could have been much worse,” Scott said at a press conference.
Due to the large response to the fire Downtown, we’ve called our neighbors to help cover calls in the City until our units are done. Twenty-three people were injured, and 21 were taken to the hospital following the explosion, which the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company said was not “natural gas related.” Officials in the city have yet to announce the cause of the explosion.
The building was mostly empty because of coronavirus restrictions and the holiday season.
