Anne Boone-Simanski: A one-year anniversary we wish we didn?t have

At the one-year marking point of one of the most horrific weather events in memory, Hurricane Katrina, the American Red Cross still needs our help. Today, as we are thanking our lucky stars and saying our prayers for the folks down south still dealing with the ravages of the 2005 hurricane season, consider a donation to the American Red Cross. Many local students completed community service commitments by spending time this summer in the Gulf Coast. Now with kids back in school the American Red Cross still needs US, that?s right, the U.S. To donate or volunteer please contact the American Red Cross of Central Maryland, 4800 Mount Hope Drive, Baltimore, Md. 21215. 410-624-2000, www.redcross-cmd.org .

CHANGING GEARS

Get ready Baltimore, Tammy Bruce is making a stop here. Bruce, according to her Web site, “is an openly gay, pro-choice, gun-owning, pro-death penalty, voted-for-President-Bush progressive feminist.” WOW. In addition, she is a nationally syndicated talk show host, author, was the president of the L.A. Chapter of the National Organization for Women. This Thursday, she will be at The Maryland State Fair, in Timonium, for a live broadcast. Thanks to the new radio station WVIE, talk radio, whose mantra is “from a feminine point of view.” According to the station PR gal, Gayle Economos, the broadcast is free, with admission to the State Fair. It?s not very often Baltimoreans get to witness a nationally syndicated talk show, especially one so multi-faceted. If you miss Ms. Bruce, you can tune into WVIE AM 1370 from 7 to 9 a.m. on Friday, where she will be in studio.

DON?T TELL

After concluding a recent visit to meet the editorial board of The Examiner, Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and his security hopped on the elevator with our top photographer, Kristine Buls. After exchanging hellos, Schaefer turned to his body guard and said “She?s a pretty little girl, but don?t tell The Sun.” Such flowery commentary has not always been the case for this candidate, especially when it comes to the Eastern Shore. Elmer Horsey?s name is better known on Maryland?s Shore?s, where Elmer was the former mayor of Chestertown and longtime pal of William Donald Schaefer. These days you see “By the Authority of Elmer E. Horsey, Treasurer,” on all of Schaefer?s campaign literature. While Elmer is traipsing around the state with the comptroller, his first lady, Joan Horsey, is trying to land a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates, from Kent County ? perhaps better known to Schaefer ? in the past as that “sh– house of an Eastern Shore.” Oops …
