NY Dem petitions to remove Trump’s name from state park

Donald J. Trump State Park could soon undergo a name change if one Democratic lawmaker has his way.

In 2006, Trump reportedly donated 436 acres of land in Westchester County, N.Y., which he’d unsuccessfully planned to develop into a golf course, to the state for public use. The land was turned into a state park and named after the billionaire.

Now, Democratic State Sen. Daniel Squadron is seeking to rename the lot in a symbolic stand against Trump’s “discriminatory proposals” and “increasingly hostile” rhetoric.

“I request that you and State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Rose Harvey act to quickly remove ‘Donald J. Trump’ from any signage or public State Parks material associated with the park,” Squadron wrote Monday in a letter to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

According to Squadron, Trump’s policy proposals are unbefitting of a campaign for our country’s highest office” and demonstrate “he is unworthy of having a New York State Park named in his honor.”

Squadron suggested enlisting members of the local community to “find a suitable name that does not compromise [New York’s] long history and core value of respect of diversity.”

The push to rename Trump State Park is the latest example of Democrats seeking to boycott Trump due to his recent proposal that the U.S. temporarily bar Muslims from entry.

Last week, a liberal-leaning columnist for the Boston Globe urged CNN to disinvite Trump from Tuesday night’s GOP primary debate and former MSNBC anchor Campbell Brown called on cable networks to cease covering the Republican front-runner “just for one week.”
