AP issues correction after attempting to clarify Obama’s case of mistaken geography

For those watching President Barack Obama’s appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” this week, they may have caught the President make a geography gaffe about some of America’s port cities located on the Atlantic Ocean. But the Associated Press is correcting itself after attempting to clarify the President’s mistake.

According to POLITICOthe news site issued a correction on Obama’s quote about port cities located along the Gulf of Mexico. The AP originally inserted a phrase to clarify what the President meant when he referred to the ports, lessening the blow of his geographical mistake.

“If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — (and in) places like Charleston, S.C., or Savannah, Ga., or Jacksonville, Fla. — if we don’t do that, these ships are going to go someplace else and we’ll lose jobs,” the Associated Press’s original quote reads.

The news site then retracted its insertion of the clarification, saying they shouldn’t have added it in the first place.

“Charleston, Savannah and Jacksonville are not Gulf ports. It wasn’t known if the president was suggesting they were. The AP should not have added the phrase in an effort to clarify his statement,” the news organization said in a statment.

The President originally claimed Charleston, Savannah and Jacksonville were located along the Gulf of Mexico. They are actually located on the Atlantic Ocean.
