New trial date for officer charged in Freddie Gray’s death

Baltimore Police Officer William Porter, the first of six officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray, will be retried in June after a hung jury was declared last week, the state of Maryland announced Monday.

Porter’s retrial beginning June 13, 2016 will follow the other trials of the five officers charged in Gray’s death. The trial of Caeser Goodson Jr. will stay as scheduled to begin Jan. 6.

After two weeks of court testimony and three days of deliberation, the jury could not come to a unanimous decision in Porter’s trial, where he faced chargers of assault, manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct in officer in relation to the April death of 24-year-old Gray.

Circuit Court Judge Barry G. Williams declared a mistrial last Wednesday.

A scheduling hearing is set for Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
