OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to testify before Senate

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to testify before Congress next week on the rapidly advancing technology of artificial intelligence and the guardrails necessary for its development.

Altman will appear at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing titled “Oversight of AI: Rules for Artificial Intelligence” on May 16, making it Altman’s first appearance before Congress. Altman oversaw the creation of the popular chatbot ChatGPT, which has sparked a surge of interest in the technology. The company has received billions of dollars in investments from Microsoft, which has incorporated the technology into several of its products.

Altman will testify alongside New York University professor Gary Marcus and IBM chief privacy and trust officer Christina Montgomery. He will appear the day after joining lawmakers from both sides of the aisle for a Monday dinner.

Altman’s appearance before the Senate is the latest event involving Congress attempting to regulate the new technology. The White House and Congress have moved toward further research and restrictions on the technology. Altman visited Vice President Kamala Harris alongside other AI company leaders last week to discuss the guardrails required to regulate the industry properly.
