Adam Schiff announces run for Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced on Thursday he would run for Senate in 2024 in what is shaping up to be a crowded Democratic primary for Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) seat.

Schiff joins Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) in mounting a bid as Feinstein faces pressure to retire. The 89-year-old California senator said on Wednesday that she would make a decision on whether to run for reelection in the next couple of months. “My husband passed away not too long ago. And so I’m still going through that,” she told reporters.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) is also eyeing the seat, reportedly telling her colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus that she would run.

Schiff’s announcement comes little more than a day after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) booted him from the House Intelligence Committee, where he’s long served as the top Democrat. Schiff, who gained notoriety for his role in former President Donald Trump’s impeachment proceedings, has for years drawn the ire of conservatives, who say he falsely pushed the Trump-Russia collusion narrative. Schiff also served on the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The California lawmaker leaned into his opposition to the former president in an announcement video posted to Twitter Thursday morning.

“I’ve always believed that what’s right matters, that the truth matters, and that decency matters. And when a dangerous demagogue tried to undermine our democracy, I wasn’t about to let him,” he said.
