The abortion advocacy group formerly known as NARAL Pro-Choice America announced on Wednesday that it has re-branded to Reproductive Freedom for All to fit the tenor of the abortion debate in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
“The fight for abortion rights and access is at a critical moment,” said organization president Mini Timmaraju. “With the coalition of Americans who support reproductive freedom growing by the day, our leadership identified a clearer and more inclusive path forward to mobilize this new and expanded base of support.”

Originally founded in 1969 as the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws, the organization officially dropped the long form of its name in 2003 to include ‘pro-choice’ ahead of the 2004 presidential election.

Now, moderate, younger, and male voters that have increasingly supported abortion rights since the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization case was decided do not connect as closely with the phrase ‘pro-choice’ as prior generations.
But ‘pro-choice’ is not the only phrase being questioned in the national debate on abortion.
Abortion advocacy groups backing abortion and reproductive access amendments to various state constitutions have debated incorporating limitations after fetal viability as a compromise with swing voters.
Although many Democrats have been clear that they do not support any limitations on abortion access, others, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, have continued to be vague on the issue, instead communicating a general support of restoring the rights under the Roe framework.
Republican anti-abortion advocates have also attempted to shift away from the label of ‘pro-life’ ahead of the 2024 election cycle.
“Many voters think [‘pro-life’] means you’re for no exceptions in favor of abortion ever, ever, and ‘pro-choice’ now can mean any number of things,” said Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) after a strategy meeting hosted by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) last month.
“You can’t get away with a label anymore,” said Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) in agreement.
“Across the country, communities have risen up against the anti-abortion extremism the GOP is hawking,” said Timmaraju. “In election after election, voters decisively deliver victories for reproductive freedom—marking a grassroots energy that has and will continue to change the political landscape for decades to come.”

The rebranding comes with a shift in policy focus, taking up greater efforts in state-level organizing as well as joining in other traditional liberal causes, such as voting rights and expanding the Supreme Court.
“Reproductive Freedom for All is a demand, a call to action, and a vision of the future we’re fighting for,” said Timmaraju.
