The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority trolled President Trump by saying Tuesday saw the largest ridership ever for a Washington Capitals Stanley Cup celebration.
“We know a lot of you are interested in ridership numbers, and we’ll have those for you in a bit. For now, we can say: ‘This is the largest audience to ever witness a @Capitals victory parade. PERIOD,'” the WMATA tweeted from its official account.

That’s a play on a remarks from former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who asserted the day after Trump’s inauguration that the spectacle was attended by “the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe.” That comment was panned as false in light of pictures that showed a higher turnout for former President Barack Obama’s inauguration.
Spicer mocked himself during a surprise cameo at the Emmy Awards in September and has expressed regret about making the claim from the podium of the White House’s James S. Brady Press Briefing Room.
The Washington Capitals defeated the Las Vegas Golden Knights by 4-3 in game five Thursday to take home the team’s first-ever Stanley Cup. The franchise is set to mark D.C.’s first major sports championship title since 1992 on Tuesday with a parade and rally.
