A Democratic congressman defended Joe Biden for skipping the largest gathering of 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls to date in Iowa over the weekend.

Biden instead attended his 18-year-old granddaughter Maisy’s graduation from the elite Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

The absence of the former vice president, 76, in Iowa came a week after he skipped attending the California Democratic convention, another major gathering for 2020 candidates.

Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes said he thought it was completely understandable for Biden, the current Democratic front-runner, to sit out the Iowa event because his name is familiar and he is leading in the polls.

“For God’s sakes, the guy was at his granddaughter’s graduation,” Hime said.

“I don’t think there’s anything to this notion that Joe Biden isn’t working hard enough,” he said. “He’s out there an awful lot. A lot of people know Joe Biden, in contrast to some of the candidates. He probably has less of a need to get known out there than a lot of the other candidates. But nonetheless, he’s out there working just as hard as the rest of them.”

Biden’s schedule, however, is less than half as packed as his fellow candidates.
