More than two-thirds of the public currently favors a halt in all immigration from Mexico during the coronavirus crisis, according to a new poll.
A total of 83%, or 5 in 6 people, say they favor a moratorium on immigration through the southwest border amid the pandemic, a new Harvard/Harris poll found. That figure includes 75% of Mexican Americans and 93% of Republican voters.
Mexico has reported more than 1,000 cases of the COVID-19 virus and 28 deaths as of Tuesday.
Last week, the Department of Homeland Security changed its asylum-seeker “Remain in Mexico” policy so migrants will remain there longer because of the outbreak of the virus.
Trump continues to pursue securing the southern border, with more than 40 miles of new wall and fencing constructed since the virus’s outbreak in the United States in January.
The Harvard/Harris poll was conducted online within the U.S. from March 24-26 among 2,410 registered voters. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
