House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said President Trump is engaged in a cover-up based on a whistleblower’s allegations that the White House attempted to conceal a record of a call between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“There are actions that are a cover-up,” the California Democrat told reporters Thursday.
Pelosi’s accusation comes after the House Intelligence Committee released a whistleblower complaint regarding the president’s call with Zelensky. The complaint alleges the record of the call was moved into a separate electronic system, apparently in an effort to conceal it.
“When you have a system of electronic storage of information that is specifically for national security purposes, and you have something that is self-serving to the president politically, and you decide you might not want people to know, and you hide it someplace else, that is a cover-up,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi announced Tuesday the House has opened a formal impeachment inquiry into the president based on the allegation the president urged Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, who is now running for president and is leading in the polls.
Pelosi told reporters Thursday she believes Trump engaged in a pattern of cover-ups, including his refusal to turn over his bank records to the Financial Services Committee, which is investigating the personal business dealings of the president and his family.
Democrats are fighting in court for two banks to turn over the financial records.
“The president has been engaged in a cover-up all along,” Pelosi said. “Why else has he been obstructing us in the courts, which have ruled in our favor?”
