A super PAC backing Joe Biden sent a memo to its donors warning that the former vice president is the only presidential candidate who can unite the Democratic Party to defeat President Trump in November.
The memo obtained by Politico on Tuesday warned donors that Trump could win reelection if Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, or Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar secure the Democratic Party’s nomination.
“We all like and respect mayor Pete. He has run a tremendous campaign. However, Democrats run the risk of a realignment of the African American vote if Pete is the nominee,” Larry Rasky, the treasurer for Unite the Country super PAC, said in the memo.
The memo also describes a “doomsday scenario” if the race comes down to a split convention between former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Sanders.
“Donors hedging their bets on Biden because of Bloomberg could be creating a doomsday scenario for Democrats everywhere,” Rasky said. “The Sanders-Warren wing of the Party is ready for the Bloomberg fight. Democrats cannot afford a split Convention.”
The warning comes as Biden has started to take a plunge in the polls. This week marked the first time in the campaign that the Delaware Democrat has trailed Sanders in the RealClearPolitics polling average. As Biden has slipped, Sanders has held steady while Bloomberg and Buttigieg have taken chunks of Biden’s former support.
Buttigieg, the 38-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has struggled in gaining support among black voters. In the latest Quinnipiac poll, he received 14% of support from white Democrats, but only 4% of black Democrats backed the former mayor.
