At least one congressional Democrat hopes the special counsel investigation will clear President Trump.
Rep. Ted Lieu told CNN’s Chris Cuomo his hope for the result of special counsel Robert Mueller’s dive into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
“The best possible result would be if Robert Mueller found Donald Trump completely innocent because I don’t want our president to have engaged in collusion with a foreign power,” the California lawmaker said Wednesday. “Now, if the report comes out and exonerates Donald Trump, we move on.”

But if it doesn’t, the Judiciary Committee member said, then Congress has to decide what to do, including investigating other aspects of wrongdoing such as abuse of power, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice.
Democrats have vowed to step up oversight of Trump and his administration, including trying to obtain his tax returns. Mueller has yet to release a report detailing the findings of the investigation, which started in 2017 and has so far led to the indictments of 36 people, including Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, his deputy Rick Gates, and Trump’s longtime attorney and fixer Michael Cohen.
“Regardless of what Robert Mueller’s report shows, there are investigations out of the Southern District of New York, there are state attorneys general investigations. This is going to keep on going to make sure that all the possible crimes that Donald Trump and associates may have engaged in will be investigated,” Lieu said.
