A Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee said Monday he will call for hearings on “white supremacist terrorism” following the weekend violence in Charlottesville, Va.
Rep. Lou Correa of California said the violence that occurred during the clashes on Saturday requires a hearing “to investigate white supremacy domestic terrorism in America.”
Heather Heyer, 32, died after an Ohio man plowed his car into a group demonstrating against white nationalists. Many others were hurt by the car, and violent clashes took place all day long between the white nationalists and anti-facism protesters.
The House is not in session again until Sept. 5.
“Yesterday’s horrific acts against innocent Americans were clear acts of terrorism,” Correa said Monday. “Our country has a homegrown terrorism problem we refuse to address. That ends now. We must hold hearings and finally address that terrorism inflicted by white supremacy extremists is destroying our country.”
Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, issued a statement on Twitter on Saturday.
“We must condemn the hate fueling the violence in #Charlottesville,” McCaul said. “It does not define us as Americans. Those affected are in my prayers.”
