Facebook to launch global project aimed at stopping election hijinks

Facebook on Thursday was expected to announce a new partnership with the Atlantic Council to deter people who try to manipulate the social media site in order to sway elections around the world.

While Democrats have been pushing to investigate how Facebook might have been used to help Trump get elected, 87 percent of Facebook’s user base is outside of the U.S., creating more opportunity for election manipulation on a worldwide scale, according to Axios.

“Experts from [Facebook’s] Digital Forensic Research Lab will work closely with our security, policy and product teams to get Facebook real-time insights … on emerging threats and disinformation campaigns,” according to outlined details of the new partnership.

The plan includes looking at specific geographic areas and monitoring misinformation and foreign interference in those regions, while also helping to educate citizens on spotting misinformation.

With elections coming up in the next few months in Mexico, Pakistan, Brazil, and the U.S., Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted in an April call with reporters that the social media site sees election integrity as a global effort.
