The U.N. Security Council condemned North Korea’s most recent ballistic missile launch Friday, calling the move “unacceptable” because it violates an agreement between the country and the international organization.
U.N. officials called an emergency meeting Friday evening to decide how to respond to the communist country’s fourth recent missile test. In an unanimous statement, the council expressed “grave concern” about leader Kim Jong-un’s response to sanctions it had received two weeks earlier. The council also urged member nations to “redouble their efforts” sanctioning North Korea.
A Defense official confirmed late Thursday that North Korea had conducted a ballistic missile launch into the Sea of Japan.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff initially reported the incident early Friday morning, saying the missile flew approximately 500 miles before it crashed off the northern country’s eastern coast.
U.S. officials believe North Korea fired a Nodong medium range ballistic missile from a road-mobile transporter erector launcher, but are still looking into additional details about the test.
