Pence postpones Brazil trip to prepare for North Korea summit

Vice President Mike Pence is delaying a trip to Brazil scheduled for later this month to help President Trump prepare for his summit with North Korean President Kim Jong Un, Pence’s office said Thursday.

“The vice president is delaying his trip to Brazil in order to ensure all diplomatic and national security resources are available as President Trump plans for his historic talks with the Kim regime,” Alyssa Farah, Pence’s spokeswoman said in a statement.

Farah said the vice president would travel to Brazil in the “near future” and continue to work with U.S. allies in Latin America.

Pence was scheduled to visit Brazil at the end of the month, and had stops planned in Rio de Janeiro and Manaus, according to Reuters.

Trump accepted in March an invitation to meet with Kim, but the specific date and location have not yet been announced. The historic summit, though, is expected to take place in either late May or June.

If the president’s meeting with Kim does occur, it would mark the first time a sitting U.S. president has met with a North Korean leader.
