‘Pathetic puppet’: Trump demands Pelosi ‘come back to Washington’ and address coronavirus

President Trump took a swipe at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as Congress remains out of session during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a Thursday morning tweet, Trump quoted Fox News’s Sean Hannity before lashing out at the California Democrat over her failure to reconvene the House during a time of crisis.

“Crazy ‘Nancy Pelosi, you are a weak person. You are a poor leader. You are the reason America hates career politicians, like yourself,'” Trump tweeted, tagging the anchor. “She is totally incompetent & controlled by the Radical Left, a weak and pathetic puppet. Come back to Washington and do your job!”

The House decided on Monday to reconvene on May 4, abandoning its previous plan to return on Monday. The next day, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Republican-controlled Senate would follow suit, citing concerns from health officials as to the elevated risk of spreading the coronavirus.

Pelosi retains the power to call the House into session, but the bipartisan agreement to close the legislative bodies was seen as a responsible step to mitigate the spread of the virus among top American lawmakers.

The House speaker has admonished Trump for his response to the virus, saying his initial downplaying of the disease was “deadly” and that his administration’s handling of it has been “sinful.” She faced criticism of her own for her appearance on late-night comedian James Corden’s show Monday, during which she showed off her extensive ice cream collection.
