Top EU official ‘appalled’ by George Floyd death and calls incident ‘abuse of power’

The European Union is “shocked” by the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in Minnesota police custody last week.

“Like the people of the United States, we are shocked and appalled by the death of George Floyd … all societies must remain vigilant against the excessive use of force,” Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, told reporters on Tuesday.

Borrell called Floyd’s death an “abuse of power” and a “very, very unhappy” incident.

He also condemned “racism of any kind” and hoped for unity in the United States during this time of unrest.

Floyd’s death has led to widespread protests against racism and police brutality across the country, which have been mirrored in several European countries in recent days.
