The former judge who gave Stanford swimmer Brock Turner a lenient sentence after being convicted of sexual assault was fired from his job as the coach of a high school girls tennis team.

Aaron Persky was fired as the tennis coach for the junior varsity team at Lynbrook High School in San Jose on Wednesday.

“Polly Bove, Superintendent of the Fremont Union High School District, explained that she was motivated by a desire to protect the players from the potentially intrusive media attention related to my hiring,” Persky told NBC Bay Area. “Although I am disappointed with the District’s decision, it was a privilege to coach the team, if only for a short time.”

The school district issued a statement that reads in part, “We believe this outcome is in the best interest of our students and school community. The District will begin the search for a new coach immediately with the goal of ensuring that the athletes on the JV tennis team are able to have a successful season.”

The former judge was recalled by Santa Clara County voters in 2018 after many were angered when he sentenced Turner, who was convicted of felony sexual assault, to spend six months in jail back in 2016.

Turner’s victim, Chanel Miller, recently revealed her identity when she announced an upcoming memoir, Know My Name.
