Thousands of teachers in Oklahoma are expected to participate in a second day of walkouts and protests Tuesday to influence state lawmakers to hike up education spending and increase their wages, Reuters reported.
More than 30,000 teachers in the state canceled classes Monday to participate in walkouts, causing 500,000 of 700,000 public school students to miss class, according to union officials, and many vow to do the same Tuesday.
Educators traveled to Oklahoma City by the busload to rally on the capitol grounds, lobby lawmakers, and protest until they get what they want.
“When our members believe the legislature has committed to funding our children’s future, they will return to the classroom,” the Oklahoma Education Association said in a statement posted online.
According to the union, out of the 584 school districts in Oklahoma, about 200 were disrupted by Monday’s walkouts.
