Media deference to the Clintons just might outlast #MeToo after all

People are really digging Monica Lewinsky these days, and her image rehabilitation might be creating some problems for the Clintons. Good thing the couple has reinforcements.

Lewinsky, now an anti-bullying activist and contributor at Vanity Fair, alleged on Twitter that Town & Country magazine uninvited her from a philanthropy summit this week because Bill Clinton subsequently “decided to attend/was invited.” HuffPost confirmed on Wednesday that Lewinsky had indeed been “uninvited” from the event. (Clinton attended to introduce the Parkland shooting survivors.)

What’s worse, Town & Country’s summit was thematically focused on how “activism has really changed the course of some of the issues we are looking at this year,” according to its editor-in-chief, a scope that would necessarily include the #MeToo movement. Indeed, the magazine’s Twitter account was happy to use the #MeToo hashtag more than once when promoting actress Molly Ringwald’s remarks at the summit.

Remember when #MeToo was going to catch up with the Clintons? Specifically that one Clinton who actually won the presidency? This seems as clear cut a case as any to prove that’s never really going to happen.

Not only did Town & Country host the former president, it apparently uninvited Lewinsky — the former intern he preyed upon from a position of authority — to accommodate him.

Elite media players just can’t quit the Clintons. Their deference to the couple will outlast us all.
