Washington Senate passes bill to limit governor’s emergency powers

Washington’s state Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would limit Gov. Jay Inslee’s emergency powers to 90 days.

Washington has been under a state of emergency for nearly 700 days, but that could soon end.

The Senate passed SB 5909, which would dictate how long a governor can issue a state of emergency, in a bipartisan 29-20 vote.

The bill would also give the Legislature’s majority and minority leaders authority to end an order, even if it is not in session.

Washington’s Legislature originally considered two bills that proposed 30- and 60-day limits before the Senate settled on a 90-day limit.

The legislation would also extend beyond Inslee’s current term as governor.
