A shooting on a Greyhound bus headed from Los Angeles to San Francisco early Monday morning left one dead and five wounded.
The bus had traveled 80 miles north of Los Angeles at 1:27 a.m. local time when the shooting started near the town of Lebec, California. About 40 passengers were on the bus when the shooting took place.

The driver pulled the bus to the side of the road and asked the suspected gunman to get off. The driver “was able to persuade the shooter” to exit the bus, and he left his handgun behind, according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Brian Pennings. After the alleged gunman got off the bus, the driver rushed to a nearby gas station where he alerted authorities.
Five of the travelers who were wounded were taken to local hospitals. The victims’ injuries left them in moderate to critical condition, and one needed to be airlifted to the hospital. One woman died in the shooting. The suspect was apprehended and brought into custody without further incident. Authorities are not sure what motivated the shooting.
Pennings called the Greyhound shooting “extremely rare,” adding, “In my career, I’m not aware of this ever happening.”
