House to eliminate funding for ex-speakers

The House today is expected to zero out funding that had long been provided to former House speakers to use after they leave the office.

A top Republican aide said Speaker Paul Ryan has called on appropriators to eliminate all funding, which had traditionally been provided to a former speaker for five years.

The House Appropriations Committee is expected to advance the provision today as part of the Legislative Branch funding for fiscal 2019.

The move changes the original provision, which limited the funding to one year.

According to the GOP aide, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was pushing for a Democrat to zero out the funding.

Ryan agrees with the move and the money will be eliminated via a manager’s amendment by subcommittee Chairman Kevin Yoder, R-Kansas.

“Speaker Ryan is a strong proponent of Mr. Yoder’s manager’s amendment to eliminate all funding for former speaker offices,” Ryan spokesperson AshLee Strong said.
