Fourth Russian general killed in Ukraine, official says

A fourth Russian general has reportedly been killed in the war in Ukraine, dealing the Kremlin yet another blow to the top ranks of its armed forces.

Maj. Gen. Oleg Mityaev was killed on Tuesday during a battle in Mariupol, according to Ukrainian Interior Ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko, who posted a graphic photo on social media purportedly of the dead general.

“One more general is among the killed invaders. At least one general today,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his Tuesday night address.

Mityaev, 46, was the commander of the 150th motorized rifle division, Gerashchenko said, adding he was killed by the Ukrainian defense forces Azov regiment.

The Kremlin has not confirmed the death of the general.

Mityaev’s death adds to the growing list of high-ranking Russian officers to die on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Maj. Gen. Andrey Sukhovetsky, deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia’s Central Military District, was reportedly killed by a Ukrainian sniper outside Kyiv on March 3.

Maj. Gen. Vitaly Gerasimov, chief of staff and first deputy commander of the 41st Army of the Central Military District of Russia, was reportedly “eliminated” during fighting near Kharkiv on March 7.

Maj. Gen. Andrei Kolesnikov, commander of the 29th Combined Arms Army of the Eastern Military District, was reportedly killed in Ukraine on March 11.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly grown frustrated with his top military brass for stalled progress in Ukraine and the mounting losses his army is taking.

At Putin’s behest, several Russian military generals have reportedly been fired, and a top spy has been arrested.

The Pentagon estimates as many as 6,000 Russian troops have been killed in action in Ukraine thus far.
