Whistleblower attorney defends 2017 ‘coup’ tweets, says ‘millions of people’ expressed similar sentiments

Attorney Mark Zaid stood by his 2017 tweets calling for a “coup” against President Trump.

As early as 2017, Zaid tweeted warnings to the president that a “rebellion” was coming that would lead to his impeachment. The tweets drew controversy, as Zaid represents the whistleblower at the center of the House’s impeachment proceedings.

In a statement to Fox News, Zaid said the tweets “were reflective and repeated the sentiments of millions of people.”

He added, “I was referring to a completely lawful process of what President Trump would likely face as a result of stepping over the line, and that particularly whatever would happen would come about as a result of lawyers.”

Zaid addressed his calls for a coup, saying, “The coup comment referred to those working inside the Administration who were already, just a week into office, standing up to him to enforce recognized rules of law.“

The attorney’s resurfaced tweets caught Trump’s attention. He bashed Zaid as a “sleazeball” during a campaign rally on Wednesday night.
