Justin Trudeau self-quarantining while wife gets tested for coronavirus

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is quarantining himself as his wife awaits test results to see if she has the coronavirus.

The Canadian first lady, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, “began exhibiting mild flu-like symptoms including a low fever” after returning from “a speaking engagement” in London, according to a statement released by the prime minister’s office on Thursday. She is being tested for the COVID-19 virus and is self-quarantining and working from home until she gets the results.

Trudeau is “exhibiting no symptoms” and is quarantining himself out of “an abundance of caution,” the statement added. His wife’s symptoms have since subsided.

Coronavirus cases have appeared on every continent except Antarctica since the virus first appeared in Wuhan, China, last year. Worldwide, nearly 128,000 people have tested positive for the virus, and it has killed at least 4,717 people.

Earlier this week, the Canadian prime minister outlined his government’s response to the coronavirus outbreak, which includes a $1 billion response fund. The money would be used to coordinate the response across the country, and it includes providing funds to the Public Health Agency of Canada, as well as for critical healthcare system needs.
