Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis wins first US gold in 2022 Olympics

Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis has won the United States’s first gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

After 16 years of trying, Jacobellis, at 36, became the oldest American woman to win gold while taking home the U.S.’s first top medal in the women’s snowboard cross.

“Racing with these girls definitely keeps me young, and they just keep getting younger,” Jacobellis said, according to NBC.

Earlier in the day, she posted the fifth-fastest time in qualifying and nearly saw her Olympic run come to an end by the first heat of the day, according to the outlet.

Jacobellis went on to take the win, with Chloe Trespeuch of France claiming silver and Canada’s Meryeta Odine earning bronze.

The five-time Olympian has only medaled once before at the 2006 Torino Winter Games, winning silver after suffering a brutal fall going for a celebratory board grab.

“I actually felt like I was already a winner that I just made it into finals,” Jacobellis said. “It’s been a long road for myself, ups and downs, injuries.”
