Activist group forced to apologize after using remains of Holocaust victims in political stunt

A German activist group apologized after it used a transparent urn said to hold the ashes of Holocaust victims to bring attention to far-right extremism.

The Center for Political Beauty, a group whose members consider themselves political artists and is known for provocation, faced backlash from Jewish organizations who said the display was inappropriate.

The group had installed an urn about the size of an oil drum outside the Reichstag on Monday. It said that the remains were sourced from various Nazi death camps in Germany, Ukraine, and Poland. Dirt from those camps was visible through the transparent orange container, which was placed on top of a metal pillar.

“We want to apologize especially to Jewish institutions, associations and individuals who see our work as disturbing or touching the peace of the dead according to Jewish religious law,” the Center for Political Beauty said Wednesday.

Six million Jewish people were killed during the Holocaust at concentration camps scattered across Nazi-occupied Europe during German leader Adolf Hitler’s regime.
