Former national security adviser John Bolton said he does not believe President Trump is “fit” to run the country.
Bolton said that he believes Trump is too incompetent to hold the office of the presidency during an ABC News interview about his soon-to-be-released book.
“I don’t think he’s fit for office,” he said in a preview of the interview released Thursday. “I don’t think he has the competence to carry out the job. There really isn’t any guiding principle that I was able to discern other than what’s good for Donald Trump’s reelection.”

In his book, Bolton made several allegations about Trump’s plans to win reelection, including claims that he sought help from Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The former national security adviser claimed that he believed Trump only cared about being reelected and acted without regard for the country’s well-being in pursuit of a 2020 win.
“I think he was so focused on the reelection that longer-term considerations fell by the wayside. So, if he thought he could get a photo opportunity with Kim Jong Un at the Demilitarized Zone in Korea, there was considerable emphasis on the photo opportunity and the press’s reaction to it and little or no focus on what such meetings did for the bargaining position of the United States,” he said.
Trump has accused Bolton of lying and breaking the law by publishing his book. The Department of Justice has filed a restraining order against Bolton and his publisher, Simon & Schuster, to stop the book from being widely released, despite several newsrooms including the Washington Examiner obtaining copies.
Bolton’s interview will air in full on Sunday.
