People are looking to speak to the manager after a new thriller film, Karen, caused confusion, mockery, and ridicule online.
“There’s a HORRIBLE trailer going around that I’m not sure is even real (please God no) for a movie called ‘Karen.’ I will not put it on my timeline, but if it’s not satire, hear me when I say the industry I love most is deceased,” Broadway performer Pia Glenn tweeted.

The trailer for the film features a not-so-subtle reference to the “Karen” trope, typically older white women who complain or ask to speak to the manager, and it spurred commentators to wonder whether the film was real or a parody.

The film was also panned for being a “duplicate” of director Jordan Peele’s 2017 movie Get Out and as an example of Hollywood dismissing “black excellence so it can manufacture more unneeded, placating garbage.”
Dear Hollywood, Hear me out: STOP trying to duplicate Jordan Peele’s work. It can’t be done lol.

??♂️Just saw the trailer. From the very first line I knew it would be trash: “This is a long way from East Point …” There’s communities all around East Point with homes like that! Hollywood is quick to dismiss Black excellence so it can manufacture more unneeded, placating garbage

In the trailer, the film’s antagonist, Karen Drexler, played by actress Taryn Manning, says: “If you don’t comply, I’ll tell the manager.”
In a later scene, Karen pushes over a trash can out of rage, calls the police on “aggressive” teenagers, and repeatedly challenges her new, black neighbors, played by Jasmine Burke and Cory Hardrict.
“We are living next door to a racist,” said Burke’s character, Imani.
Manning said in an interview that she had a “social responsibility” to star in the film, even if she had to be Karen.

“I felt a social responsibility to take on this role. Even if I had to play the villain to affect change around the globe, then I was more than willing to step into the role. What’s been going on is devastating. It’s time for change, and for me to be a part of the bigger picture meant a lot to me.”
