Kaine spokesman: Comey ‘seeking atonement’ by campaigning for Democrat

Former FBI Director James Comey is “seeking atonement” by knocking on doors in northern Virginia, the top spokesman to Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said Tuesday.

Comey, who lives in McLean, is volunteering and canvassing for Jennifer Wexton, the Democratic candidate seeking to unseat Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock in the 10th Congressional District.

Sharing a photo of Comey showing up to volunteer, Kaine spokesman Ian Sams tweeted: “Someone is seeking atonement…”

A Wexton communications aide noted that Comey told him that this was his first time canvassing.

Kaine was the vice presidential running mate to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential contest.

Clinton and her allies blame Comey, in part, for her for contributing to her defeat because he announced the FBI was reopening its investigation into Clinton’s unauthorized email server less than two weeks before the contest and closed it again just days before it took place.

Comey was fired by President Trump in the spring of 2017 and has since been openly critical of the commander in chief.

In an op-ed for the New York Times published on Election Day, Comey, a former Republican who this year has urged people to vote Democrat, wrote that America will recover from the Trump presidency, and said the country will again be able to make “progress” again.

On Twitter, he tweeted that knocking on doors, after voting, “should be fun.”
