FEC tags Facebook, Twitter, Google in ramp-up to new online regulations

Input from the heads of Facebook, Google and Twitter is being sought by the Federal Election Commission as it moves to impose new regulations on web-based political ads that show up on small devices like smartphones.

A leading driver of the regulations, Democratic Commissioner Ellen Weintraub, vice chair of the panel, tweeted out her letters to the social media giants today.

In letters to Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google’s Larry Page and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, she asked them to appear June 27 when dueling Democratic and Republican proposals will be discussed.

All three of the sites have provided written comments on the proposals.

Both sides have begun to grapple with the surge in online political advertising. In the past 10 years, web-based advertising has surged 780 percent.
