Comedian Dave Chappelle is supporting Andrew Yang for president of the United States.
But that does not mean he does not sympathize with supporters of President Trump, he said.
“I don’t look at Trump supporters as my enemy at all,” Chappelle told reporters in Iowa. “I understand why people voted for Trump; I understand people are desperate. And I think that Andrew is right; you run against the reasons that Trump got elected.”

Chappelle is proud of the fact he has fans from both political parties at a time of heightened politicization in America.
“I got friends on both sides of the political aisle; I got fans on both sides of the political aisle,” he said. “A lot of people say professionally it’s not wise to support any candidate, but this idea is so good that I think it should exist.”
Chappelle explained his support for Yang, as well.
“And for some reason, no one’s paying attention [to Yang],” he complained. “This guy is the origin of a platform that really does address where I think the country needs to go.”

Chappelle on Sunday won a Grammy for his wildly popular new Netflix special Sticks and Stones, which featured several jokes about Trump and other leading political figures.
