The White House accused Democrats of using Thursday’s House vote to enshrine violations of due process into law and blasted what it said was a “sham impeachment” process.
In a statement, press secretary Stephanie Grisham said the result, which sets forth the rules for impeachment proceedings against President Trump, was a partisan attempt to “destroy” the president.
“The Democrats want to render a verdict without giving the administration a chance to mount a defense,” she said. “That is unfair, unconstitutional, and fundamentally un-American.”
Rather than working on important issues, such as gun violence or prescription drug costs, she said, “Democrats are choosing every day to waste time on a sham impeachment — a blatantly partisan attempt to destroy the President.
“With today’s vote, Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats have done nothing more than enshrine unacceptable violations of due process into House rules.”
Republicans have repeatedly accused Pelosi and her supporters of denying the president a fair hearing.
